Catching Cats

For the last few years, we have started planting milkweed in our front yard.

Actually, let me start over. On our nature excursions, we must have inadvertently transferred milkweed seeds into our lawn. A few years later, the sheer number of milkweed plants poking through the lawn caused us to make a special area reserved for this monarch butterfly’s favorite plant. It worked well for me as I am becoming more of a “the more you grow, the less you mow” kind of guy.

Now as our milkweeds are towering, we enjoy daily hunts for monarch eggs and caterpillars, or cats. It’s fun being able to raise these ctas and release the beautiful butterflies. That process is special, but I most enjoy watching the kids scour the leaves for caterpillars and jump for joy when they catch a cat.
