Day 144

Time to put planning into action. I examined my garden plan and assessed what I had and what I needed. Based on the plans, the first thing I would need was a lot more raised beds. Luckily, being somewhat of a repurposed wood hoarder since buying the farm, we had plenty to spare. I would simply do some measuring, make some cutting, and turn old wood and give them new life as new and one-of-a-kind garden boxes. That was my plan until a stroke of luck came my way. Through social media, I have been known to seek help and assistance when needed. One time, I must’ve asked for gardening advice. Somehow, a friend of a friend reached out to me and said he was downsizing his garden and had lots of raised beds available. Maybe I wouldn't have to make them out of pallets. For a very nominal price,  I was able to acquire a wonderful amount of stackable raised beds in used, but excellent condition. Once I picked them up and delivered them to the farm, I started laying them out and seeing if the plan on paper was feasible in reality.

Things went pretty well when I started laying out the new beds. It looked nice, but as with most plans, things were adjusted along the way. The initial layout was altered (multiple times) to accommodate new ideas and interpretations of what the backyard garden should be. Even with the previously used pallets and the assortment of newly added beds, we still needed more raised beds to make the plan truly come to life. Besides turning more pallets into raised beds, I was able to use original wood planks from the old kitchen and transform them into unique and customized beds. Laying out these new boxes, the next phase of this space was on. It had started as a mechanical junkyard. Then it was a bumpy and rocky lawn. After scraping, it was a mud pit full of possibility. Now it was a somewhat orderly collection of wooden boxes ready to be used to create a garden.

But the garden wasn't a garden quite yet. The real work had not yet begun.
