Day 153

Even though major work on the property line was on hiatus at the time, we didn't want to just leave the area as is. We still felt compelled to establish and maintain property lines. We just opted for a cheaper version. And, one that could be chicken friendly.

Trees were an expensive option and one we weren't quite ready for.  A berm would be useful but we weren't quite sure if it was necessary until we knew what our neighbors did. Leaving the area as it opens it up to the whim of our new neighbors. We wanted to be somewhat proactive in making sure we not only protected the actual property line, but everything we had improved on our slide of that line. However, we figured we might as well try something and see if it would be viable until we might need to do something else.

We opted for something we unsuccessfully tried at the old house. It was something we enjoy whenever we do find it in nature. It was something we knew the chickens would enjoy as well. We opted for raspberries.

Rather than starting from scratch, I decided to get help from others. In my research, I noticed that raspberries were a bit temperamental and thrived under certain specific conditions. Successful plants often shoot up extra canes that could be transferred and start their own bushes. Because these plants are aggressive, they can serve as great boundary bushes and pseudo-property lines. We had some space between where our chicken run ended and where the property line is so we thought it might be a great opportunity to put in some raspberry plants and see what happens. I reached out to social media and instantly had a few people offer me the opportunity to come thin out their bushes in an attempt to start my own. After a few trips to a few locations, I acquired enough bushes to not only plant a few rows along and near the chicken yard, but also along the fence up near the house. With daily watering and adding occasional chicken compost, I am hopeful we will finally have successful bushes for all to enjoy.

Day 152 - To Berm or Not to Berm
