Day 211
Since moving to the farm we’ve had plenty of visitors. Early on, people came wondering about things the previous owner had put up for sale. Throughout the process, Amazon and UPS drivers traveled through our u-drive time and time again. Friends who hunt have occasionally scouted and used our land to try and find their next trophy. People occasionally drop off egg cartons and pick up eggs. General contractors visited the property for what seemed like forever. To name a few, we’ve had real estate agents, masons, foundation specialists, plumbers, carpet cleaners, farmers, electricians, granite countertop installers, exterminators, grading specialists, gutter installers, solar salesman, carpenters, locksmiths, restoration professionals, small engine repairman, HVAC experts, washer and dryer fixers, gravel deliverers, tree removal specialists, dumpster droppers, metal scrap collectors, floor installers, roofers, window salesmen, kitchen designers, water softener experts, landscape architects, and plenty more I’m sure. My wife and I occasionally joke about it being a “three truck” kind of day on days where many people working on the house visit on the same day. Sandill cranes, turkeys, crows, songbirds of every color, and many other feathered friends are frequent flyers around the property. Deer stroll through the backyard constantly. Squirrels, chipmunks, and bunnies appear when they’re not scared away by our neighborhood hawk. Unfortunately, box elder bugs, ground bees, and mice have made their presence known as well.
Having visitors was something we enjoyed and appreciated. We hoped our place would be a gathering place for playdates and family celebrations. But while we hoped to expand our social circle in our new home, we also knew we could use our home for other purposes as well. With twenty acres of nature all around us, we had options galore.
But for most of the first two years living here, those options were put on hold while we spent time restoring the land and renovating the structures. It wasn’t feasible and safe to have people over when the house wasn't ready to keep them comfortable. While that restoration and renovation will be an ongoing part of our future, we wanted to start the process of using our land for different purposes and seeing where the adventure takes us.
