Day 244
Our chickens appreciate a clean coop, but they often take for granted all the other things we do for them on a regular basis. The snacks. The water. The enrichment. Sometimes, I just want to take away all of these things until they show a little more gratitude.
While obviously tongue in cheek, the daily routines and responsibilities of chicken caretaking can be quite exhausting. Occasionally, everyone needs a break. Our family loves taking day trips and extended weekends around Wisconsin. What used to be a common occurrence throughout the year has become a rarity now that we live at the farm and have a flock to watch over.
Before chickens entered our lives, it was much easier to have our pets taken care of in our absence. Provided enough food and water, the cats and turtle are pretty independent. The dog, much to the chagrin of my father-in-law, was accustomed to visiting his doggy pals at the on laws.
That doesn’t work with chickens. They are more sensitive and need a little more care. Whether it is collecting eggs, refilling water, and locking them up in the barn at night, it’s not advised to leave them alone for longer periods of time. This puts a big cramp in our day trip and long weekend style.
Initially, we limited our trips and stayed busy at home. However, the temptation to visit our favorite destinations became too much and we needed to find capable chicken sitters. We are fortunate enough to utilize a list of people who have shown interest and ability to take care of our flock. We have neighbors, family, and 4H friends who have stepped up to help us when we feel the need to get away. Because taking care of the farm can be a little overwhelming, we are very appreciative of our chicken sitters. Teaching them the steps that need to take place every day really emphasizes just how much work gets put into maintaining a farm. While feeling a bit guilty, we hope to find that healthy balance of taking care of our many responsibilities on the farm while still enjoying time with family at our favorite spots to visit.
