Day 252

The fact that we have options for sharing our property with the community is completely compounded when I wake up on a crisp fall morning. There is little I find more enjoyable than the cool air and sunshine of a September morning. Of course, we all know what follows September. I’m a big fan of the winter holidays, but there’s something about Halloween that makes it my personal favorite.

Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around trick or treating, choosing and decorating pumpkins, and the excitement of viewing a thrilling horror film with my friends. SAs a parent, I feel this energy again vicariously through my three kids when we visit the pumpkin farm, select costumes, and peruse the Hallpween decorations at stores, and take a nice drive to see even more decorations around the community.

Looking over our big backyard on early mornings where the fog hasn’t lifted and seeing our solar powered trail markers light the path at night makes me wonder if some type of haunted walk is potentially a part of our future. I think strategically placed bowls of candy on a decorated trail at dusk on a somewhat chilly evening is a great way to share our holiday spirit with the community.

I think one of the reasons I want to bring Halloween to the farm is that we don't really have a “neighborhood” in which we can see fun and festive decorations. Similarly, because we live on a  busier country road, we also don't really have a neighborhood where kids can trick or treat. While we can easily connect with a nearby subdivision, there’s a somewhat distant feeling that can be overcome if we can make our own property a destination.

We could also decorate the barn. We can add lights and other spooky features. Maybe a chicken costume contest? Blaring some creepy, catchy tunes is also a wonderfully ghoulish opportunity.  There are already about a million and a half natural cobwebs so we are already one step ahead in the decorating process.

We might not be ready for a full blown fright fest on the farm this year, but keep those eyes and ears open.

It’s coming.
