Day 294
Animals.
We love them. We have three cats who we love even when they are not the kindest to our carpets and couches. We have an old dog who still shows spunkiness when guests arrive even though he can barely hear or see. We have a turtle who travels black and forth from the classroom to the basement. And of course, we have chickens. Lots of chickens.
Taking care of the animals takes teamwork. There are certain jobs relegated to the adults, but slowly but surely, we are handing off tasks to the children.
Every morning, we herd the cats for their medication. We make sure the dog gets outside. If we won't do these things, we are sure to have to do extra cleaning if you catch my drift. We check food and water and make sure to give them plenty of love. We also head out to the barn to open up the chicken doors and air out the barn. Making sure the turtle has lettuce or some other vegetable is a pretty simple task the kids can easily handle.
During the day or after school, we continue our daily animal routines. The kids take turns collecting eggs and occasionally assist with filling feeders, adding water, and scooping poop.
In the evening, we check waterers and feeders one last time, close up the barn for the chickens, and relax with our furry friends. The cats tend to keep their distance when the children are out but get a little more cozy when they head to bed. Our dog goes from couch to couch in search of the best sleep spot while the cats take their rounds around the house.
Even though they take up time and money, we love our animals. We’ve even considered adding to our zoo. Our oldest wants a peacock. Our boy wants a pig. Our middle seems content but sides with whatever sibling she isn't squabbling with at the moment. Goats seem to be a potential next step. We have the space. Their level of care seems manageable. And, they eat anything and we have plenty of weeds for them to enjoy.
Our zoo might be adding tenants soon.
