Day 304

Speaking of informative and interesting, when we were active citizen scientists at the nature preserve in our old neighborhood, my savvy and creative daughter proposed a rather unique idea. At that stage of her young life, she had aspirations of being a YouTube superstar. For entertainment, she watched videos on YouTube, often starring children doing simple things like testing out new toys. She wanted to try and replicate their success with something she was interested in: nature. Though she has always been sort of a treehugger, she probably also had becoming super famous and rich by becoming a YouTube superstar as an ulterior motive. Regardless, I was just happy she wanted to do something creative in nature.

Every week, we brainstormed different topics based on what was happening in nature around us. Then, we went to the preserve and made our videos. We made a wide variety of videos that hopefully offered information and entertainment. We covered various topics including nature play, nocturnal animals, the life cycle of trees, invasive species, and birds.

Occasionally, we had to re-do certain scenes and even made some changes on the fly that we thought would make it more enjoyable for our viewers. To this day, she loves drama and performing. I have a feeling the early acting and work she did in these nature episodes were a catalyst for her interest in drama.

Once we felt we had enough information to put an episode together, we downloaded the video clips, organized them. And sent them to the world through special media and my blog. Many people seemed to enjoy them and commented that they looked forward to what we would do next.

But then we moved.

Since then, we haven’t gotten back into nature film production. But I am hoping that will change.  Now that my oldest has more experience in both technology and the ins and outs of drama, she can take more of a leadership role and involve her two siblings. They all love nature and exploring outside so it would be a natural fit (pun intended). Together, with their big backyard, I know they can create some fun films to share with everyone. Stay tuned.
