Day 306

Until Snippy returns, we are thinking of adding to our property to invite even more nature friends. Ever since we acquired the farm, the idea of adding trees has been near the top of our wants. Unfortunately, it is lower on the list of needs.

Until now.

We have plenty of trees already on our property. However, most of them are dead. We have started clearing them so we can have access to broaden our restoration efforts but this is a timely and expensive process. Now that we have lived here for some time, we are eligible to get funding to help with this project and that is what we intend to do. While this is more of a large scale project in our wooded areas, we may start adding trees around the property for other reasons.

First off, now that we have neighbors with more on the way, we want to be proactive and responsible in protecting our property lines. We’ve heard plenty of horror stories about property line battles and we’d rather be peaceful, but protected. Trees and shrubs will offer a great visual barrier.

Adding trees and shrubs will also serve as a great wind barrier. We’ve felt the chill and brute strength that unblocked winds can do to our backyard and our chicken yard. Adding trees, along with the new houses, would help suppress the wind’s strength and protect our yard even more.

Trees will also help soak up excess water. With the land being sculpted and shade in different ways due to the developments around us, we want to do what we can to help make sure our yard and barn don't get flooded out. Trees will help in that goal.

However, one of the main reasons for adding trees is to improve the natural world around us. Trees and shrubs along our property lines will help protect the restoration work we have already done by blocking the expansive and aggressive invasive plants and helping strengthen the native habitats we are improving.

Plus, more trees can attract more animals, especially birds.

Of course, adding trees takes time. We’re not necessarily young anymore, but we’re excited to see our trees grow.
