Day 342
When we are inside during the winter season, if we aren't watching a movie, you’re more than likely going to hear holiday tunes booming through the house. We are a very musical family, so it’s not uncommon to hear music blaring wherever we might be. Throw in the holidays and it is a guarantee.
While I am a big fan of holiday music, when it starts earlier and earlier every year, I do get annoyed. Maybe it’s because I love Halloween and it is clear that Christmas is encroaching on the spooky season. Maybe it’s because I connect holiday music with winter and snow. Either way, I reserve the right to withdraw from holiday music until the day after Thanksgiving. But once we start the holiday tunes, we listen to them all the time.
In either vehicle.
During breakfast and dinner.
During bathing time.
While we prepare for bed.
And when we aren't listening to a song, we might be singing or humming one in the house or in the barn
We all have our favorites. I will never pass up hearing any version of O Holy Night. However, most of our holiday listening is more contemporary. The two girls battle over song supremacy between Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer or I want A Hippopotamus for Christmas. Much like his favorite holiday movie, our son absolutely adores Mr. Grinch, though Snow Miser vs. Heat Miser is on shuffle as well. He prefers watching the YouTube versions of these songs while he listens. That being said, all three kids are overjoyed when Last Christmas hits the airwaves.
A bigger battle is between the adults. My wife and I have very interesting opinions. A favorite of ours drives the other one nuts. My wife is a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen’s Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Overrated is a word that comes to my mind. I have an affinity for Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime. She does not share that opinion.
Regardless of personal tastes, our entire family can agree on one thing. Listening to holiday music is a consistent theme during the winter season. But music in general is a constant at our farm.
