Day 38 - Revenue Avenue
We knew acquiring this property would require new avenues of revenue. We discussed a lot of these potential ideas when we walked the property and got to know the layout of the land a little better. On one of these walks, a potential idea presented itself.
We knew that having a golf course as a neighbor meant that our farm would be protected from further development. The golf course wasn't going anywhere anytime soon, so there was some certainty in our property lines. Hearing the low rumble of golf carts in the distance is somewhat soothing and the occasional yell of “FORE” after some poor golfer’s errant shot always makes me chuckle.
There must be plenty of errant shots cause whenever we walk near the golf course side of our farm, we find gold balls. Lots of them. The kids make a game of it every time and earn extra points for the colored golf balls. We bring them back to the barn and add them to a growing pile.
Not being golfers (unless it is the miniature version), the girls decided to earn some extra money by hosting a lemonade stand. . .with golf balls. After sorting through and categorizing balls by their brand name and condition, we quickly realized some golf balls needed to be set apart and potentially sold for more money using different methods. The balls that made the cut were placed in egg cartons and ready to be sold.
The girls decided to sell them for three dollars a dozen and I was pleasantly surprised at how fast they went. One customer inquired what hole we lived by. Not having any idea, I mentioned the hole was bordered by a pond which shared the property line. Right away, he was able to identify the hole and state that many, many golfers overshoot it, sending their golf balls over the drink and into the woods on the north end of our farm..
Good news for us! It looks like our golf ball revenue avenue won't be shut down anytime soon. So if you are in the market for golf balls, I know a few kids who are more than happy to help.
