Day 139 - Expensive Error
In an attempt to save equipment from disastrous destruction, I bolted over to the newly fallen tree and somehow dropped my phone. Luckily, the falling tree got caught up on the limb of another tree and a major and potentially expensive crisis was averted. Being so relieved that the equipment suffered no damage, I didn't even notice my phone was missing. I started moving some of the fallen tree away from the equipment and then assisted the other helper as we moved onto another tree. Wanting to finish the photo/video I had attempted before, I reached into my pocket to grab my phone.
Uh oh.
At that point, I hadn’t even realized when I lost my phone so I tried to retrace my steps the best way I could. However, with the maze of snow encrusted footsteps and the water that pushed through every step of broken ice, it became pretty evident that finding this phone would be next to impossible. I needed a miracle, but I walked around to see if I could find it. With every new step I took, more water rushed to the surface and the footstep maze got even more chaotic. After bringing the tree takedown to a halt, my helper asked if he should try calling me. He would need to get to his phone in his car, but it was worth a shot.
Would I even be able to hear it? Was the loud ringer loud enough? Was the ringer even on? Was it already underwater?
I had pretty much accepted that my phone was submerged and would stay that way until spring. I had already tried to come up with “softer” ways to break the news to my wife.
Despite thinking everything was futile, I kept the search alive. I figured I had to do something until my friend was ready to continue the project and take down another tree. I saw my friend walking back, attempting to call me. I couldn't hear a thing. Seeing me search, he knew the phone was still missing. I joked with him that he might have to break the news to my wife and then it hit me. Literally.
