Day 140
I rushed over to save the equipment from the falling tree right in the midst of trying to snap the perfect photo of a tree falling. While the search had created paths of footsteps in the snow in every direction imaginable, I should be able to pinpoint where I dropped my phone.
Or so I hoped.
I asked my helper to call me again and walked back to where I thought the phone would be. Listening intently, I still heard nothing. Hopefully, I might see something. The bright sunlight’s blinding reflection of the snow on this sunny winter day didn't make it any easier. I was losing hope when I looked down and saw the miracle I had been praying for. Right there, nestled nicely right on top of the snow with puddles and muck all around it was my phone. Dry and undamaged, I could see my friend’s name light up my phone like an angel’s halo.
Within a few minutes of this miraculous event, the second sawyer returned to hear the tales of adventure he left in search of his missing chainsaw treasure.
I locked my phone in a sealed pocket, ignored all interest in taking any more photos and turned my attention to helping my two sawyer volunteers take down trees anyway I can.
We took down a fair number of trees but decided to end our day at around lunchtime considering the water was only rising along with the unseasonably warm temperatures.
After packing up and trudging our way back to the dryer, we visited a local eating establishment and laughed over the somewhat successful morning. Though there were many more trees to take down, we decided it might be best to not test fate any further and return to the tree takedown party in a drier season or when the land was for sure frozen through.
Taking down the trees certainly made me excited for the seasons ahead, even though I knew they would be plenty busy. The wetter than expected land slowed down my hopes of getting certain projects done. But this did leave me time to do some planning.
And, I definitely had some big, big plans.
