Day 30 - The Slowing Storm
Moving to the farm brought in tons of ideas, enthusiasm, and excitement for what the future could bring. Even before we had our offer accepted, we were thinking and dreaming of the many ways we could create a wonderful experience for our family. Every night , I loved looking out to the west over our fields and forest. The setting sun brought such beauty and peace and was much appreciated after a hard day of work.
One of our first evenings, it also brought electricity in the form of a huge storm. Having taught at a school just a few blocks away, I was familiar that there was something unique about the wind here. Maybe it was because there wasn't as much developed land, but the wind seemed to be much more forceful in this area when compared to our old neighborhood a handful of minutes away.
As most storms do, it came on quickly and powerfully. Looking out over our backyard from the second story, it was both thrilling and anxiety-inducing to see sideways rain, trees bending (and thankfully not breaking). The howling of the wind and pelting drums of rain brought with it rhythm and stress. We were fully expecting the power to go out and had no idea what would happen. Not only were we not aware of how the house fared under these stormy situations, we were not unpacked and organized enough to deal with any serious issues.
Lucky for us, these serious issues never came. Besides a flicker of the lights, we had no loss of power. Considering many other residents directly across the street from us lost power for nearly a full day, we were very fortunate. We knew that the previous owner was a master electrician, so we joked that he must have used his knowledge to make the house power outage proof.
Surviving the storm relatively unscathed was comforting. It also allowed us to pump the brakes and focus on what was most important. Having these grandiose, long-term plans was all fine and good, but focusing on the here and now was also important.
To build a better future, we needed to learn a little about the past.
