Day 332
The snow on the ground brings up a ton of emotions. I am somewhat excited to see some of my more mundane yet necessary chores go on hiatus. I won’t need to mow or weed anytime soon. I’ll need to shovel, but I don't mind it to a certain point. It's a great workout and it gets me outside.
The snow is also somewhat depressing. Well, not the snow but the short days associated with it. I often wake up when it’s dark and come home when it’s dark. Thank heavens I utilize my outdoor classroom. The kids and I need as much sun and winter air as we can get.
When asked about my favorite season, I tend to say the one on the opposite end of the calendar. If it's a sticky and sweaty summer day, I’ll miss the chill and crispness of a snowy winter day. If it is an “air that hurts your face day” of gray. I’ll miss a warm walk through the woods.
But now that winter weather is here, I’ll try to avoid any seasonal affective disorder by keeping busy. Trekking fresh water to the chickens multiple times a day is one way to keep busy but I look forward to more recreational opportunities as well. I know snowshoeing and cross country skiing are options, but the timing has to be right. It also needs a certain amount of snow. The last few winners, it feels like the snow amounts have been so sporadic, relying on snow is a potential disappointment.
I love to run. I just haven’t. Whether it has been work responsibilities, family tasks, or farm chores, running has been put on the back burner. The way back, back burner. I truly hope to make that change. I have a trail right in my backyard. I've never had an issue with running in the cold. I actually prefer running to warm up rather than sweating up a storm in summer. With good gear and an even better attitude, winter running is a wonderful way to pass the coldest time of year.
Stay warm. Stay fit. Stay happy. Run in the winter. I know the perfect place.
