Dandelions

Our family are huge fans of “the more you grow, the less you mow.” So when dandelion season comes around, we are excited, not annoyed. There is so much beauty and possibility with this flower often mistaken for a week.

With the lawn monoculture being such a huge element of meticulously manicured neighborhoods, I often felt pressure and even shame when my lawn wasn’t pristine and perfect. I even felt a little guilt and nervousness when the “weeds” took over, especially compared to the green landscapes around me.

With a little more distance between neighbors now, it is a bit less likely I feel guilt in letting things grow. However, with 20 acres to take care of, I am fine with Mother Nature doing her thing. Slowly but surely, gardens, native shrubs, trees, and wildflowers will gradually replace the boring and monotonous grass currently dominating our farm.

Until then, I’ll let those dandelions grow.
