Sounds of Spring

Many people associate the return of the robin as a sure sign that spring is on the way. However, more and more, researchers are finding that robins are increasingly sticking around the whole year, especially during milder winters. In fact, ornithologists have turned to the return of the red-winged blackbirds as a better way to monitor an impending spring.

Personally, I judge the official beginning of spring as when I decide to scamper out to the backyard to collect a winter’s worth of doggy doo doo.

But ultimately, though it makes occasional appearances during winter, there is one sound that I find synonymous with spring.

The sound of play.

Whether it be emanating from my own children in our own back yard, our neighborhood friends in and around our section of houses, or random children at the local playground the sounds of play mean spring is on the way.

Stick your ear outside and see what spring sounds like wherever you are. Better yet, go outside and make playful spring sounds of your own.
