The Farm - Weeks 12 & 13
The last few weeks of the farm have been very productive, The farmer friends who mowed the marsh hay (reed canary grass) were able to bale it and remove it. They were also able to drag a few fallen trees to a new location. With the land much easier to access now, I took one of the riding lawn mowers out and made a path around the perimeter. When the flakes fly, this will be come my snowshoeing route.
The “"new look” land also gave us more time to imagine and envision what it will become, but put work into starting that process. We continued the process of moving sticks and branches into our burn pile. We traveled to the wooded section of the land and continued our search for golf balls. We pulverized a puffball mushroom and found some animal bones.
But our biggest adventure was planting seven trees near one of our boundary lines. Besides being more of a natural boundary, these trees should also help control the invasive reed canary grass. Also, hopefully these fruit trees of apples, pears, and peaches, will provide some food and attract some wildlife.
The kids got a kick out of helping out in the process. Whether it was planting the trees, watering them. or putting up some barrier fence around the young trees. it was great to have the kids help and get used to helping our farm continue to grow and develop.
Of course, getting my oldest onto the tractor and teaching her how to take it for a short and slow spring was certainly a highlight.
