The First Steps. . . Lap 1

In 2023, I challenged myself to write a 365-word log each day describing the story of our life on the farm so far. It was tough at times, but overall, finishing that challenge was incredibly satisfying.

In fact, it has made me want to start a new one.

I am an avid fan of the Ice Age Trail. Completing that nearly 1,200 trail is a dream of mine. I will have to do it sections at a time but I know I can accomplish it. When I do, I will become an official Thousand Miler.

Until then, I’ll have a different challenge. In 2024, I aim to become a Thousand Lapper.

At our farm, Craneview on Plainview, we have a trail that generally makes a lap around the property. II have used that trail for many reasons.

Exercise.

Restoration.

Wildlife watching.

Citizen science.

Fun and leisure.

While I haven’t kept track of how many laps I have already take, I will in 2024.

I have some ideas that will make these laps more interesting that I will share as my challenge progresses.

Today, I walked Lap 1. It was a slow, wet walk where my high boots often caved through the snow and dunked into the hidden water below. I saw a rather large bird fly out of our wooded area and off into the distance and noticed a number of the plastic solar lights I placed along the path have gone missing. It was a refreshing and rejuvenating way to start the day.

Will I get to 1,000 laps? Only time will tell. I hope you join me along the way to find out.
