Lap 2. . .For the Birds
With my goal of being a 1,000 lapper in 2024, you may think I am off to an incredibly slow start. Well, you would be correct, but this is somewhat intentional.
The laps will be completed for various reasons. Land maintenance, restoration projects, wildlife watching, and trail running to name a few. Currently, Mother Nature isn’t very keen on allowing us to do much of anything.
After a massive snowstorm a few weeks back, we have had even more major thawing with day after day of above normal temperatures. Much of the land is quite wet. This is the wetter time of the year anyways.
We’ve been told that as our restoration project moves forward, we would obviously see changes in the land. Similarly, we were told that if the restoration was going the way it should, we would notice a drastic change in the hydrology of the land. Based on how wet it is currently, we are doing fantastic.
I still found time to place some newly acquired bluebird houses around the drier and accessible parts of the land.
While these houses were put tup to attract blue birds, I saw our first sandhill crane visitor while I put the houses up. Earlier in the week, we also have a bald eagle make an appearance. If this spring is like last spring, out backyard will be a haven for migrating waterfowl. I can’t wait to see who makes a visit.
