Tired of Tires?

Constantly looking to find ways to add and improve the play possibilities at our trail’s natural play area, I started digging into the world of loose parts. I saw how the addition of random loose parts opened up the floodgates of fun and creative energy in the classroom. Paper towel rolls. Buttons. PCV pipe pieces, Bottle caps. Knick knacks. Whatchamacallits. Items destined for the junk drawer. New art ideas, games and creative experiences were created.

I began to wonder if introducing loose parts outdoors would have a similar effect.

In short, the answer is yes. Through generous donations from my students, the outdoor play area now has a loose parts section (though the materials travel) of larger PVC piping, wooden pallets, large spools, and of course, tires.

Every time we head out there, it’s always a surprise to see what happens next. But rest assured, I don’t see anyone getting tired of tires anytime soon.
