Water Woes

Like every other living thing, chickens need access to fresh water on a daily basis. For much of the year, this isn’t a problem for us. When ever it rains, our rain barrels fill up, occasionally filling our auxiliary plastic pool, and we have an easy and quick opportunity to fill their waterers.

Winter is a whole new ballgame. While we are blessed to have our barn, it lacks running water and heat. Not necessarily the biggest problem in the world, but occasionally an inconvenience.

To keep our birds hydrated, we need to purchase and hang special heated waterers. They aren’t the cheapest and their longevity is always questionable. Because we have no running water in the barn, I get daily exercise transporting water to the barn at least once a day. It’s cheaper than a fitness club membership, but lacks certain perks.

But at least are birds get the water they need.
