Day 16 - Final Inspection Insurrection
Once the official closing took place on the new home, we would have a few short days before we needed to get out of the old one. What had once felt like a marathon was transforming into a full blown sprint. We lived on the bare minimum for those last few weeks, packing whatever we could in advance to make the move easier.
With three days to go before closing, we headed to the house for our final walkthrough. As mentioned earlier in the Day 1 entry, it went anything but smooth.
Less than pleasant language. Threats to cut the lock. Frustration with our denial of renting out the barn.
We drove away from the final walkthrough without really even walking through. However, we did notice that it seemed very little of the house had been cleared out and time was ticking. To pour salt in the newly opened wound, our tire was flat by the time we drove back into our soon-to-be former driveway.
Not knowing where to turn, we reached out to the person who got the brunt of the verbal assault: our realtor. He mentioned that because the owner threatened to cut the locks he had to report the incident. He made contact with the selling agent, who basically washed his hands of it by ignoring and avoiding. It was then that we found out that our realtor had worked with this selling agent before and found him to be less than pleasant to partner with in dealing with a sale. We didn't know what to do.
Later that day, we had a scheduled reunion with my college roommates. What should have been an exciting time showcasing our excitement for our life-changing movie turned into a phone tag between us and our realtor.
Eventually, it came to light that the best way to move forward was to involve a lawyer. We were able to connect with one pretty promptly and get the ball rolling. Using her understanding of the law, she made contact with the owner’s realtor.
The ball was officially out of our court and we had a few days of wondering what in the world was going to happen next
