Day 18 - Dumpster Drivebys
I never anticipated watching dumpsters fill up as a viable entertainment option. Of course, I also never considered having to bring a lawyer into a real estate transaction. But when we did just that, a fire was lit and the owner and his family took to action. Oddly enough, part of that action was an actual lighting of a fire, discarding materials not suitable for sale or storage.
Though we were told the wheels were in motion, we couldn't feel completely comfortable unless we laid eyes on the situation ourselves. Remember, up until this point, the owner gave us the impression that all he wanted to was to make sure everyone was happy when in reality, it was a whole different ball game. With the hours creeping before the scheduled closing, we decided to keep a close eye on things. Literally.
In between final packing preparations at the old house, we did dumpster drivebys at the new house. We saw a number of dumpsters get filled, removed, and filled again. We saw (and smelled) a burn barrel full of flames throughout the weekend. The driveway was consistently filled with vehicles and people seemed busy loading and unloading every time we drove by. Even though we didn't have the best view, we could tell that slowly but surely, the barn was emptying out.
Relieved that this dream turned nightmare was nearing its conclusion, we had our own clearing out to do. That final weekend was a mixed bag. Excited at the adventure ahead of us, the place we were leaving behind left us quite vulnerable. We wanted to soak in every moment in our neighborhood with the people that made it special. One last trip to the frozen yogurt shop at the end of the block. One last walk on the recreational trail. One final visit to the pond and woods at the nature preserve. One more pizza dinner. One more chat with the neighbors. One more run. One more dog walk. One more bonfire. One more memory. Even typing these words brings back a flood of memories and emotions.
One final walkthrough remained. Well actually two. One at each house.
Then the real fun begins.
