What a mess!
When I first started really digging into more of a play-based classroom atmosphere, I was worried about the mess and “noise” associated with playful learning.
But I was more worried about the questions rising up ion my head.
What would other teachers think?
Would my kids be out of control?
Would administrators and parents see me as lazy and apathetic about student success?
Then, I just put those worries aside and started playing. Initially, it was tough.
I saw toys and tools scattered around. I heard laughter, arguments, and problem-solving. I felt uneasy, excited, and nervous.
But after looking past the inevitable noises and messy situations that inevitable come with playful learning, I took a deeper look at how and what my kids were doing.
They were engaged and excited. They were learning how to take care of their classroom and each other. They were working through issues and problems together, ups and downs included.
Was it loud? Yes.
Was it messy? Occasionally.
Is it worth it? Undoubtedly.
